The Times: Free University of Berlin ‘censors history’ after taking money from China

The Times quotes me on a professorship at Free University Berlin sponsored by the Chinese government: “One of the big problems of Chinese influence is that it is often not in the public eye. Professors could be censored or practise self-censorship. I don’t think such professorships should exist in Germany. The fear is especially real for sinologists: if you speak out critically against China, you might not get a visa in the future or you might be disadvantaged in other ways. This means many simply decide to keep silent.”
